Lights blink when major appliances start

08/11/2005 01:16 AM datoda

Hi,

Could someone please shed some light on the problem I have with my electric system? Whenever a major appliance, such as the AC or the dishwasher, starts, the lights in my house would blink noticeably. I was wondering how the problem can be corrected. It's a 100 amp system. Thank you.

Blinking

Some dimming of lights is expected when large motor circuits start due to the high initial current draw they require. If you feel it is excessive, have an electrician check for loose wiring in the service panel, or have the power company check the wiring on their side.
Do you notice some lights dimming and others getting brighter? If that is the case, then you may have a more serious problem with a loose or damaged neutral. Again, an electrician or the POCO can determine this for you.

Surge protector needed?

08/11/2005 09:27 AM datoda

Thank you for your reply, househelper. I don't know if some lights dim while others get brighter when a major appliance starts, but I do notice that the devices (including TV and computer) that are plugged into two surger protectors don't seem to be impacted by the initial current draw. Does this mean that I need a whole house surge protector?

Surge

A whole house surge protector is never a bad idea, so adding one couldn't hurt.
The power supply for most electronic devices masks any momentary dips due to motor starting, so that is why you don't see problems there.

Surge Protector

Your symptoms indicate a bad connection, undersized wiring, and/or an overloaded power company transformer.

While a good idea a whole house surge arrestor won't fix this problem.

I would start with the power company as they connections are exposed and more likely to be damaged.
