You will also need to install a lintel in the block opening. The lintels used in a block wall are generally made of steel reinforced concrete designed to match the block wall. They must rest on at least 8" of the block wall on both sides of the opening and the area of wall supporting the lintel should be filled with concrete block fill or grout before installing the lintel.
Using a diamond blade on a "Quickie" saw (or pipe saw) is one way to cut the opening. To repair the sides of the opening you should "tooth" out (remove) the hollow bocks that have been cut and replace them with square end blocks cut to fit (with the cut side facing the existing block) to achieve the smooth solid opening you need.
