Low-clearance garage door opener needed

01/05/1999 11:07 PM

I have a 16’ wide garage door that I would like to add an electric opener to. The problem is, the ceiling in the garage is low, and the door, when open, misses the bottom of the ceiling joists by barely ½ inch. The garage door is only 6’7” high.

Someone had told me there were specialty garage door openers for situations like this, but I have been unable to locate any information. Since I will be replacing the garage door soon, there is the option of getting one with a lower height to accommodate the opener, but I would much prefer to keep the height the same to maximize the already low headroom.

Any help you can offer will be much appreciated.

TOMR,

yes, there are specialty garage door openers with minimum necessary clearance. I'm not sure what part of the country you're in, but in the midwest OVERHEAD DOOR and LIFT-MASTER are a couple that come to mind. My brother-in-law had to have one, they cost a little more(of course). check with your local specialty Window & Door companies, they should have some information to point you in the right direction.

Low clearance

I have the same question. About a half inch clearance from top off door to rafters. This is a 1950- 1960 detached garage , Do you have to raise the rafters 15 inches to get the clearance you need to install a sectional door & opener?
