MDF 1x3 casing and 1x4 base..good/bad?

I'm near the end of a process ripping a living room and hall way down to studs, firring out walls, insulating, rewire...the works. The trim in the rest of the house (1953) is pretty typical for that time and has been painted numerous times. I live in a small mountain town where materials are very expensive. I want to somewhat match the rest of the trim in the house (painted), but will probably do more of the 90 degree look with plinths.
All that said...I've gotten very mixed reviews on the use of MDF material for trim. Everything from don't use it..to it should work just fine as long as you paint it and don't get it wet. My only other choices are clear pine or alder...both more than twice the cost of MDF. Does anyone know the good/bad or ugly about MDF...also about the use of MDF and resale values.
Thanks.
