Metal Kitchen Cabinets

01/02/2000 10:28 AM kiwi1

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post, but its the closest topic to what I need to find out.

Buying a house that has aluminum metal cabinets, with a formica "wood" inset in the middles. Love the cabinets, hate the inset.

Question: Has anyone heard of, know of, think its feasible, to take the doors off the cabinets, and have the formica areas cut out and have glass inserted so I would then have a more clean looking cabinet. Would the aluminum (its about 1/2 thick) support a thin piece of glass?

Any ideas would be most welcome

Thank you!

Hi Nancy, without being able to actually see your cabinets it's kind of hard to say what can and cannot be done but I'll take a stab at it. First of all there should be some method of removing the panels without cutting them, check the back and sides of the doors for screws or possibly some slots for prying. Once you've figured out how to gain access, remove the panels and measure them or take with you to the hardware store. Now as for the replacement, I'd recommend against glass simply because it's easily broken and thereby poses a safety hazard, instead go with plexiglass. Plexiglass will provide you with the desired visual effect, is safer, and lighter weight. Hope this helps, good luck!
