Currently I am living at home with my parents and I recently dropped and broke a floor tile in our basement. They are brown and tan tiles, There is also a shuffboard made of the same tiles in the basement. I recently read that these tiles COULD contain Asbestos, My father refuses to get the tiles tested and both of my parents think I am over reacting.

1)How do I convince Them to get the tiles tested

and

2)What kind of medical treatment should I go under, I only broke one tile but the tiles in the shuffle board are breaking at the corners.

Please help, I am terrified of dying of lung cancer or some other type of asbestos related death.

It sounds like your parent's house has some very loose floor tiles. Loose tiles could either be adhered with new mastic or picked up and disposed. We don't know if the tile contains asbestos, and even if it did, the probability of fiber release is very minimal unless the tiles are ground up or sanded.

A test is not expensive, and you can request a "polarized light microscopy" test for asbestos at an analytical lab. Ask for an estimate for the test (generally under $50) Simply submit a sample in a zip-lock bag or other suitable container.

There is no medical treatment required for anecdotal exposure to asbestos. Even heavy occupational exposure is not treatable, but treatment of symptoms or disease, usually from long-term high exposure is an unfortunate legacy of our use of this material.

Practical advise: avoid creating excessive dust by wet-cleaning the tiles. Do not excessively break or abrade them. Clean-up broken tiles and dispose in sealed plastic bags.
