Hey Chuck........already pledged. I'm number 9, number 9 , number 9 .....couldn't resist; how often can you use the Beatles???
Only 2 items left to get: stamping tools and still have to get Mahogany, weird as this sounds, with all this population crowding Long Island, you can't find good wood. Sapelle (way to gnarly)is sold around here when people ask for mahogany, I found a guy towards the City, but its an hrs trip one way for me, I'll need to kill about 3 business birds with 1 stone. Thursday/ Friday of next week I'll pick it up.
Have an old #4 Craftsman bench plane that I lapped, still have to sharpen the iron and get'er fine tuned.
Printed off the Fine Woodworking articles on Federal Furniture, the Latta reference you make is excellent, there was another by Pittman (Gate-leg Table). Been poking in all my old books, forgot I had a text by Franklin Gottshall titled: "How to Design and Construct Period Furniure", he has specific chapters on Hepplewhite, Sheraton, Bros Adams, Phyfe, I've been having a blast just poking in the period. Went into my "Masterpieces of Furniture" by Salomonsky and had a note on plate 72 of a FWW article on that specific Bombe'. Sure enough Lance Patterson. ..NBSS
Even read mention of Big-T's boy, Wallace Nutting whose furniture when compared is "the equal of any that has been done by the great cabinetmakers of the eighteenth century."
Guys......I haven't cut a board yet, and I'm having a blast. Not only is this a special undertaking we are participating in but its taken me out of my contemporary/transitional building zone and I'm just lov'in it. And at this particular moment, I'm in a juxtaposition between researching the old masters, my own work plus Carlo, and have just shot video with a current Studio Furnituremaker who is presenting at the June- Furniture Society Conference. This past few weeks have just been great. There's Nothing better than new juice!!!!
Hey Chuck.....the one thing I left out of my pledge was:
I promise not to slip in a piece of MDF on my T-Mac Special.
To our future Night-time hours with the Masters..let's make Chizz proud and kick some internet woodworking butt!!!!!

neil...you dont know how happy your rediscovery makes me...you know this federal stuff was real cutting edge stuff back then...especially since our beloved country was in its infantile state....hence the eagle arrow olive branch insignias introduction into the finest pieces of art back then....its really unbelievable those shops pumped this stuff out....look into john and thomas seymour ..they are considered the best of the best......its funny but these guys were in the middle of the political scene ..i think they were in a church with the likes of john adams john handcock paul revere....just to name a few......i love this stuff and thanks for seeing what is is really about ...the furniture is cool ...but for me the story it tells is way cooler...... |

Neil,
Your right on all counts, it has been fun to research the old designers and master cabinetmakers. The Mahogany was difficult to find. In the Midwest, we have a lot of domestic woods readly available.
Don't know about slip'in some MDF on this project. However, just purchased a vacuum bag and need to learn vereering techniques. (Tommy, I got the bag without having to sell any planes...had to do some horse trading with the wife!!!)

Neil,
I have a cabinet shop friend who gets my wood for me most of the time, But it takes for ever to get it, so today I just drove a 100 miles to Pa. get my mahogany. You know what though, this place I went had everything you can think of there and they let you take your time and look at what ever you wanted. Well worth the trip just to see some of the stuff they had there.
