OSB on gable ends or just siding ok?

I have this sinking feeling I was givin bad advise so I am hoping someone tells me otherwise or atleast how to fix this problem now that it may be too late.

I am framing a house for myself for the first time and using gable trusses. I have never built a house before this. I was advised on the gable ends to not mount them flush with the wall studs but rather hang them over 7/16" which would make them flush with the osb on the walls. This way the siding could be installed on the walls and directly to the roof truss without sheathing on the truss. This way its a smooth look all the way up. At the time this made sense.

The roof is nearly done now and I have started thinking that this is not going to be a very strong gable end. We have 50-60 mile an hour winds on a regular basis and I am scared of the winds breaking right through the lap siding and damaging everything else in its path.

I will be using hardieboard lap siding, 8.25"x12' peices. THardie board seems kinda brittle. Will it be enough to protect from high winds?

I'm kinda freakin out a little bit about this and wished I had asked this question a couple of months ago.

What do you guys think?
