oil base or latex?

03/19/2005 01:37 PM handywife

I'm repainting an exterior front door and don't know if original owners used latex or oil based paint. I've heard of a test whereby you rub alcohol on the paint and if it rubs off, it's one or the other...I just can't remember which. Can someone help?

latex vs oil

I answered this once, but I don't think it posted, so sorry if its a repeated reply...

Anyway, put denatured alchohol on a cloth and rub the area in question. If the paint comes off on the cloth, or at least softens up noticably-it's latex. If the surface is unaffected, it's oil.
