Paint seems to thick?

06/14/1999 11:50 AM

I've just recently painted two outside doors on my house. The one I painted last week looks good but I have just painted another door and it is a disaster. The first coat didn't cover it well and the second coat has all these runny streaks and bubbles. Help!!

What kind of paint did you use? Oil or latex? If you used the same paint on both doors, it sounds like there were different finishes for the old paints. You may have applied a latex over an oil-based without properly prepping it.

In any case, light sanding would have been necessary to break the seal of the old paint. A good cleaning comes next. An oil-based sealant, such as KILZ, should then be used; you can then apply either oil or latex over the KILZ.

Sand down your current mess, clean and seal. Then try to repaint.

Thanks for your reply. I used latex on both doors which had the same finish.
