Pavers over broken concrete patio?

04/29/2003 08:48 AM sungen99

I have a 15-18 foot cement patio on the back of my house. Approximately 8 to 10 inches thick. Two problems exist with it. The first is that it has cracked down the middle and therefore is rather ugly looking and two, there is a sewer cap (I think that’s what it’s called- out of my house) is smack down in the middle of the stupid thing.

I have called several places to get an idea of just how much it would cost to break it up, haul it away and put in a new one. All in all I’m looking at around 2,200. 1300 bucks to just break up and remove the old one- ouch.

This got me thinking, I have measured the distance from the back door to the top of the cement and its around 6 to 8 inches from the stoop. Could I just put down a retaining wall of 2x8 and attach it to the existing slab with tap-cons put down a plastic barrier, fill it with sand and put down paves right over? I’m sure there is some kind of round barrier I could put around the sewer cap. And put a nice base for an umbrella stand.

Any ideas or comments would be really appreasiated.
