Pella casement windows? |

I am in the process of replaceing the windows and siding in our house. I am planning on replaceing most of the windows with pella double hung windows because I can get a size that is right for the old rough opening. There lies the problem.....in order to meet egress codes for the bedrooms the double hung windows are to small but I can get pella casement windows that will fit the opening and meet the egress code. otherwise I have to open up the wall and re-frame the opening(I don't want to do this to badly)Has anyone had problems with the pella casement windows? I remember my parents had casements 25 or so years ago and always had problems with them being drafty, I should think that over the years they got better in quality and stuff, did'nt they? anybody Rod |

Hi, First of all, I would check with your local building code official. Typicaly if you're replacing an existing window and the house was built prior to the codes for bedroom egress openings being written, then you can replace them with the same type & size. Second, new casement windows are better than the old ones. Better locking mechanisms and better seals. |

Also look at different manufacturers. Pella's typical casement window is wood framed. I put one in an egress hole I had cut into my basement wall. I don't like it, get something vinyl clad. I just think they'll seal and last much longer. |

pella does make an alum. clad wood casement window. pella makes a great product and with the double latch it helps with the seal as opposed to the older casements found in many homes. |
