Pergo over particle board subfloor

I meant to include this in my other question, but I would also appreciate some honest opinions about another situation. Basically, I am trying to decide between laminate and hardwood for a living room and hall. The issue is that I have two dogs...Great Danes. So I am mainly concerned with scratching. Obviously carpet is not a consideration, and tile would not fit with the style of the house. I have spoken to a lot of "experts" on the subject and have gotten the impression that if I go with hard wood, I'll be refinishing it nearly every year. I don't want to have to go through that inconvenience, but I know that it would add more value to the home than laminate. I wouldn't need to refinish laminate though, just possibly replace sections (I'd use the quick-lock kind) when needed. Your opinions regarding this dilemma are GREATLY appreciated!
