Pergo over particle board subfloor

The choice in flooring is a personal one, I for one would put down Real Hardwood...as far as the dogs, I know some one who had 2 bouvaies(?) at 115# each, yes the floor was dented and scratched, but not thru the finish.
The floor was refinished after 8 years, who ever told you that you will refinish every year? If you keep the dogs nails trimmed, you will minimize the problems. Keep water bowls off the hardwood.
Check into White oak flooring, it is a darker brown with no red to it, and is denser than Red oak. Another thing would be to install quatersawn Red oak, you will not have the wide grain, which the dogs nails will dig into. It will cost more too!

Check to see if hardwood floor installers in your area use swedish finish (bacca/glitsa or senteko). There are also oil finishes that you can use that do not have to be waxed and can easily be touched up.

My advice is to go purchase a few pieces of "pergo" and a few pieces of real hardwood, which looks better to you? Put your hand on it which feels better? Find a "pergo" floor look at it in direct low andge sunlight...do the same with hardwood.

There is something else you need to consider...it is a floor, not a piano, Scratches add character/charm.
