Pet stain removal

09/01/2007 07:27 PM sweeetpea0

We just bought a townhome that was rented out and I also have a rental place that we are moving out of. I have a black light and there are a few pet stains in the carpeting that need to come out. I have tryed about 5 cleaners and nothing is working. I need something to get it clean. I have pets of my own so, I don't want anything that would harmfull to them. PLEASE HELP!

Blacklight

A blacklight is often used to find urine stains. This is fine, but you can clean a urine stain and it may still fluoresce under a black light. The cleaning chemists don't quite understand why yet.

Most commercial organic stain removers that I'm familiar with add free oxygen (are oxidizers), such as hydrogen peroxide or Sodium percarbonate (that releases hydrogen peroxide when added to water).

Oxiclean is about as close as you can get to an over-the-counter version of these. Try it in an inconspicuous spot before spraying all over your carpet.

Note that removing the stain and removing the smell are often different problems.

hydrogen peroxide

In case you are wondering, hydrogen peroxide, H202 releases an oxygen atom and becomes H20 (water) that then evaporates. The oxygen reacts with the stain and neutralizes it.
