Planting grass on old lawn of weeds

I have a big yard of totally weeds. Would like to plant grass this fall, but not sure how to tackle this. I live in Hickory, NC

You want to use Roundup (or similar product) that will kill the weeds and not sterilize the ground.

Do that 2 weeks before planting. You can plant the next day. But by waiting 2 weeks you can rekill anything that was missed.

Then use a verticuter (rented power machine) to lossen the surface. Then rake up the dead weeds.

Use a starter fertilzer and seed.

Contact your local county extension service for details on lawn care. They will have sheets inidcate the best types of grass to grown in your area and when is the best time to plant grass.

In cooler areas Sept is better, but in some warmer area spring is better.
