Pledges Goal Has Been Meet!!!

03/24/2008 10:23 AM CMiddleton

Tommy,

You have received more than the required ten pledges for your crazy leg project. I am sure that everyone is excited to see the project develop. However, I am still gathering the necessary tools and supplies for the project. I for one, would expect that it will take another week to have everthing that is needed.

I have been getting up at 5:30 am trying to get a honey'do project far enough ahead, so I don't hear too much grief. I'll have to squeeze the craze leg project in at night.

Great podcast on the miter corners on the top moldings.

Material accumulation check

03/28/2008 07:32 AM NLamens

Hey everybody:

First off.......where's Ronaldo?? We know you are moving, but being in early on this endeavor, means the team still needs your moral support.

Second.......wondering if Chuck is about right on materials accumulation time. Dave...are you mahoggy or nutty?

How far along is everybody accumulating materials????

Picked up lumber yesterday (fiasco: for another time), so I'm pretty much set now.....would like lumber to sit around in my shop a bit. I'm pretty much primed though.

How about we give T-Mac a status report, so he has an idea of where we are.

Status of Materiald

Yesterday picked up Mahogany for Ken (WalnutBeagle) and myself. Ordered my Mickey D veneer packet from Ben, however, still waiting for delivery.

Questions for Tommy...Are you going to show the group how to cut the legs so the grain orientation is correct? I have seen it where a cardboard cutout in the same dimensions as the leg was used to ensure the grain of the wood is orientated from corner to corner. This is to ensure that the grain is as straight as possible in the leg. (see attached pic) Or is this overkill? Would you like us to just cut the wood to rough dimensions?

In the attached picture, I highlighted the grain direction in one of my pieces of wood in pencil for clarity.

Yo...

03/28/2008 01:52 PM McLaren1592

Don't worry about me, I'm just real busy with work and all right now...

I might go with walnut for this one guys.... I wouldn't mind having this thing match the other living room stuff I'm making.... plus I spent a bunch of $$$ on some HT gouges... and I have some nice stuff in the shop already... The S. Amer. Mahogany at one of the local stores is over $11 bdft.. is this reasonable?

I'm close to stores for tools and veneer so I'm just going to get what I need when I see it in a video....

take it easy guys, sorry I've been such a stranger lately

Mahogany price

03/28/2008 02:59 PM robphill33

Hey Dave,

I think I paid $14/b.ft (8/4) for the S.A. mahogany in Burlington (Exotic woods). $11 sounds like a good price.

Gen Mahogany Price

03/28/2008 03:20 PM CMiddleton

I just paid $9.80 BF drove 100 miles, however, it we made a family outing. Locally Rockler is selling at $15.00/ BF, DSI has is for 10.20/ BF, except you have to take whatever lenght was available, another words, if there were only 10 BF or more BF available in lenght you would have to take the whole board. All prices are for 8/4. Did buy some 6/4 for $9.70/ BF; they did not have any 5/4 or 4/4 stock.

Definition of Gen Mahogany

03/28/2008 03:29 PM CMiddleton

Genuine Mahogany apperantly means any mahongany except Africian Mahogany. Asked for Honduras Mahnogany and they told me that it was the same as Gen Mahogany.

Tommy are the right about this? I normally work with American walnut, cherry, sometimes red or white oak, basicly domestic hardwoods.
