Hi all,

I need your help. I'm in need of repainting my house at this moment, and have had several bids. The latest company is convinced that you should not/must not powerwash rough cedar siding before the prep, but hand sand it down, which adds alot to the cost. Others say it's safe if you do it right.

Who is correct??

No Reason NOT to power wash as long as you allow ample time for power washing to dry...

Can be safe as long as who's doing it does it correctly and rip the rough cedar to bits with the pressure washer.
Yes give it ample time to dry otherwise you will seal in the water and moisture and it will make the paint bublle up or peel away.

The reason you wash a house before you paint it is to remove dirt and mildew and sanding will not do this.

I would stay away from that lastest company as it sounds like they don't know what they are doing.

You should wait 3 dry days after you wash the house before you apply paint to it.

I meant doesn't rip your siding to bits.

You will have to hand sand and scrape the siding if there is peeling paint but that is in addition to washing, which will remove the dirt and mildew. Be sure the person power washing your house allows the cleaning chemicals to do the work and not the pressure and really all the powerwashing needs to do is rinse the house off not blast the dirt off which will damage your siding.

Don`t do it !! The pressure greater than useing a pushbroom or scrubbing brush,and rinsing with a garden hose, will take the pulp out of the wood allowing it`s resistance to water to fail !!
