Preparing boards for glueing up flat panels

02/15/2008 11:02 AM CMiddleton

Tommy,

When you prepare wood for a glue up of a flat panel, do you hollow out the center of the boards a few thousands of an inch? (Enought to see a sliver of light between the boards). I have heard this is done to prevent glue joint failure, due to the ends of the panel releasing moisture faster then the center of the panel. What are your thoughts?

hey chuck..thanks for coming to the forum....and yes this us how i glue boards together....some guys will tell you ..you need to buy a biscuit joiner and all....that thing does crap....all it does is help align boards....but any way....this is how i do it...after i thickness the boards...at the same time so the wood is the same thickness..i decide which boards will go together best....this takes me some time.....there is allot to cincider...... go to the big a ss table videos to see what i mean......then i clamp the 2 boards and plane them with my #4 from end to end ...after i know they are parallel i take a few swipes out of the middle of the boards ...making each pass longer than the last ...you should be able to take the boards and push them tight by hand .....

Tommy,

After watching David Charlesworth and just a few other doing this, I started planing this hollow before gluing up panels. But I was never sure if it as overkill or not. After see the quality of your work, and watching your different techniques, I'm convinced it is not overkill.

Just turn yourself a single long handle out of some dense hardwood for your L-N socket chisels, presto you now have a set of paring chisels by exchanging the handle on whatever chisel you need to pare with. (one of the benefits of having socket chisels is trading out the handles)
