I have two Mahogany Doors with Southern Exposures and the finish on the doors is peeling off after only a couple of years. I believe the finish is some type of varnish. What is the best way to finish the doors so that they do not peel when exposed to the sun? Is there a finish used on wooden boat trim that takes the sun well? Someone suggested a solid stain for the doors. Someone else suggested some other type of finish that completely contradicted the guy who recommended the solid stain. Who should I believe. Thanks in advance for any help. Bob |

I'm interested in what replies you'll get. Its been my experience (8 summers for a stained porch railing) that if you get 2 years out of the coatings before it peels you are doing good. The problem is the sun - UV rays. They break down even the best UV inhibitors. Paint isn't much better. |

Hi BobF, Here's the Poster's other Post: Doors and Windows. I have Spar Marine Varnish on my solid oak, double entry doors. I also have a porch overhang. I get about 3 months of direct sun in the Winter (only). The doors have been in for 4 years now, and are showing just fine. My contractor said that if you can run your finger on the finish and get a 'chalky' residue, then it's time to refinish. When refinishing, he suggested Liquid Sandpaper, and then 2 coatings of the Spar. Sounds too easy for me!!! My best to ya and hope this helps. Jay J -Moderator
