Progress - If it looks like a table.... |

I'm getting there guys.... it looks like something now. On to tapering next and hopefully some stringing soon as well.
Geez, ever thin down your tenons with a router plane? It was a little cumbersome but it worked out pretty good - I need to get a shoulder plane, or one of those rabbeting block planes... but for now I'll make due with whats kicking around the shop
Where's everyone else at? Anyone other than Brian and Rob done the bellflowers yet?

Hey Dave,
Looks like you've made quite a bit of progress on the table. I hear ya on the shoulder plane. Ive never used one, but I know it would be a very useful tool. |

Dave,
I finished the bellflowers and stringing. Currently in the process of making the banding. I made my bellflowers slightly different than Tommy's...after reviewing the pictures of Crazy Legs again, I noticed that his middle pedel is much longer than the two sides pedels. Mine are not the are only slightly higher. They still look good, but they are incorrect.

Chuck,
Tommy may have elongated his middle petals a little by extending his gouge cut. Mostly, they look longer because they start lower than the side petals. Since the side petals cover the top of the center one, you can't see where it starts and it gives it a stretched out appearance.
The bellflowers on the sideboard, and Crazy Legs, are Seymour style bellflowers. One of my instructors, Dan Faia, just started doing samples of various styles of bellflowers and they are pretty cool. Some have the center petal on top, some have different sand shading, and some use two gouges per petal. It's definitely something worth looking into if you decide to use them on another project.

I watched the short video by Phil Lowe on the link about the Seymour's and he stated that the middle pedels was much longer than the side pedels. This prompted me to go back a double check Tommy's picture and sure enough his middle pedel was longer. It's all in the details...

Eli,
As I mentioned above, the bellflowers don't look really bad. They just are not correct to what a Seymour bellflower is suppose to look like. I will know better in the future. Is there a link or a source to see the other types of bellflowers. I know that Steve Latta does some Baltimore type bellflowers in FWW issue 182 page 96

Dave and Chuck.
Looks good guys. I finished the draw front tonight, and worked on the inlay above the bell flowers as well. I have the fan done it just needs to be inlayed into the top. By the weeks end the only thing I should have left is the banding on the bottom of the table.
Lessoned on guys. Save your self a lot of time and headaches by making sure the banding is the same thickness as your draw front veneer. I made mine way to think thinking it would just be easy to get it flush. Not true. It took way to long and I had a couple of pieces tear out I had to repair. Luckily I cut two extra strips. I was able to get the same grain locations to put back. So rip that stuff paper thin.

Thanks for the heads up on the thickness of the banding |

Justin,
I have been trying to keep the thickness closer to the 1/32", on some I actually have it closer to 1/16". I will use the thicker banding for the edge of the top.
I just finished banding the bottom of the leg this morning.
