I have the need to recess a tile in wood, level with the wood. What would be best way to do this and have straight sides along the wood and tile?

Hi Chicken,

First, I'll assume you're using ceramic tiles ...

You have 2 options: 1) Route-out the 'area' you want to set tile into, or 2) buy a piece of wood that's thick enough for the tile to sit on, and border it w/wood 'trim' that's at the height you want.

RE: #1 - Since you'll need to use some sort of backerboard for the tile, you'll need a fairly thick piece of wood to route out. If you use 1/4" backerboard and 3/8" thick tile, you'll need to figure in 5/8" into your project. You didn't say anything about the 'bigger picture' so I can' comment any further, other than saying you don't want to tile in on 'plain wood'.

RE: #2 - You'll need to 'connect' the trim to each other AND to the back piece of wood. It could get hairy when attaching the trim to the 'middle' piece of wood (that you're trimming out.) The trim wood is one 'thickness' and the middle wood is a different one. In other words, if you were attaching 3/4" trim to each other, as well as to a 3/4" SOLID piece of middle wood, then it's no problem because you simply 'center' your biscuits in ALL the pieces of wood. In your situation, you don't have the same wood thickness for all the pieces.
