Refinishing Rosewood Furniture

03/02/2003 04:38 PM HerrmanG

My wife and I have acquired a large solid rosewood Cinese sideboard. It needs a little work. Unlike other rosewood furniture we have, which has a reddish color, the sideboard is a dark brown color. Is it possible to refinish and stain this old chest so that it matches our current furniture? What book(s) might we read to help us with this project? What techniques familiar to you might work?

Refinishing Rosewood Furniture

I was just reading some guitarmaking literature and they mentioned that rosewood can be challenging to finish because it contains some waxes/oils that repel some finishes. Of course -- the easy to apply finishes! They recommended spray lacquer, which requires a spray booth, spray rig, etc. The inevitable disclaimer on this is that there are many woods called rosewood.
Good luck with it!
