We just moved into a house whose woodwork is all the wrong color for our decor. I want to stain the fireplace mantel a much darker color. How should I go about doing this. I am inexperienced at refinishing woodwork. The mantel and surround have lots of little grooves that will be hard to get sandpaper into. I had read somewhere about using TSP and then liquid sand to prepare the piece, any thoughts on this. I would appreciate any input. Thanks
