You typically need to remove the window sash and frame.
First remove the sash by loosening the hardware.
Once the sash is removed, you will typically need to use a pry bar to get in behind one vertical frame jamb and pry it out to a point where it can be cut with a bi-metal blade on a sawzall or with a hack saw..
Once cut, remove this jamb then repeat for other jambs or just pry out.
Only then install the replacement window.
