A long time ago (over 15 yrs, in a previous home) I took out a tub and replaced with a shower in a master bath. It was a little different situation than yours, as there was lots of room to work and we moved the shower a few feet away from the tub's previous location. One reason for this was that the tub was by a 'knee-wall' (low ceiling due to sloping roof) and I had to move it to allow for standing room. (Good idea, huh ) What is the tub made of? (The one I had to deal with was really crummy, rusty painted steel.) If it's cast iron (very heavy but brittle) it can be smashed with a sledge (no personal experience but I saw it done on TV--maybe This Old House) (wear safety goggles!). Fiberglass or steel--you might be able just to pry it out and carry (with some help). In my particular case I built a shower stall for a pre-manufactured fiberglass base--then put up concrete board and tiled. The shower stall was simply a wall of 2x6's as I recall (as they hid plumbing). I don't recall too many specifics--but it doesn't stand out as having been one of my most difficult projects (there have been lots worse). I also don't recall anything about the plumbing involved--but it wasn't anything major. Good luck; enjoy your project, and the results! |
