Restoring 100 year old tile

03/27/1999 06:02 AM

OK call me crazy, but I need some help restoring 100 year old tile. I live in Belgium where I work for the US Government. The house we live in has tile floors that are almost 100 years old (the previous floor was dirt if you can fathom that!). Unfortunately, the floors have never really been taken care of at all. When we moved in, we tried a European product called "Klir" that was supposed to seal and shine the floors. It was soaked up like water in the desert. Any ideas on how to fill in the massive pores that are apparently present and then put a shine on these floors? The tile is very ornate and actually I could imagine it being very beautiful if it were restored. Someone told me to use linseed oil, beeswax, and something else, but they did not know the "recipe" for the mixture, and I certainly do not want to damage anything in our rental home. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
