Retrofit insulation on my 47-year-old home

12/10/2007 01:12 PM Sugee55

I want to have fiberglass batt insulation installed on my attic floor (over what is already there, I think wool). Got a couple of estimates, and am ready to go. PROBLEM: the access to the attic is through one of two closet ceiling openings, one being 29" x 12" and the other being 19" x 16." The contractor tells me that these holes are too small to get the batts up there (the house has a hipped roof 6/12 pitch). Any suggestions? I'd rather not have the blown-in stuff, but may not have a choice. If I do the job myself, is the stuff at Home Depot easier to handle? Any suggestions at all would be helpful.
