It is sometimes possible for rodents or birds to get into the dryer venting from the outside depending on the vent cover that is in place. A start might be examining the dryer where the vent attaches at its rear rather than going from inside... although that might be necessary too.

You might also want to take the time to thoroughly clean the venting at the same time. It should be done regularly anyway to help prevent dryer fires.
