I've run accross asphalt shingles over the years which have been painted...{on purpose AND by accident}. I've never seen evidence they were damaged......however, I imagine it's possible they could be damaged if you were to use an oil-based paint.
You might look into the idea of using a water-based white roof coating which can be tinted. Or just use a GOOD acryllic.
