Roof style name

09/23/2006 11:02 PM PamBam

What is it called when the corners of a gable roof are turned inward? I really like this look, and would like to have these little "turn-ins" on my gables of the house we are framing.

Thank you.

Clipped Gable

Are you talking about clipped gable, also called Jerkinhead roof?

Here are some examples.

Or maybe a dutch hip.

Neither of those. It's the eaves that turn inward. You can barely see it in this house photo, but the turn-ins also are shingled.

Eave Return

"Eave return: a roof edge that makes an acute inward turn for a short distance on the gable end of a building. This is a decorative element of the Greek revival style."

However they may not be shingled, just trim.

5. The next official stop on the tour is 303 N. Huron.

This person calls it an eyebrow return.

This calls it a cornice return or shingled cornice return if shingled.

And a full eave return if the shingled portion extends all the way across the gabel end.

More Cornice Returns.
