Roofing - Georgia Pacific Summit Shingles

02/22/2005 02:43 PM Ralphjr

Has anyone had trouble with Georgia Pacific Summit Shingles? I am currently getting bids on a new roof. One roofer said he is replacing Georgia Pacific 30 yr Summit Shingles at 10 years.

Hi, I have a 12 year old GP roof that I thought had hail damage. A reputable roofer said it was defective shingles. Had any luck getting response on your roof? Thanks!

GP Summit cont'd

My roof is approx. 16-years old &, same as "GP Summit" author, I found out about widespread blistering following a 'hail inpsection' by my insurance co. (i.e., no hail damage, but blistering throughout roof).

By working through my home builder, & his supplier, I was put in contact w/GP Roofing Claims: Charlotte Williams, 1 800 445-0952.

If your shingles were purchased prior to Jun '94 then you need to talk to Raymond at (404) 652-3748, who will send you a claim package...which is a 'bear' to complete.

If you bought after 1994 and have a claim, per their 800 number, you are to call Atlas Roofing at 1-800-478-0258 for a claim package. Mine is on the way.

GP Summit Shingles: Organic Mats vs Fiberglass

11/27/2009 10:52 AM 1QualityRoofing

Do they have a fiberglass or orgaic matting.
In the manufacturing process cellulose mats can retain moister. Sandwiched in hot asphalt can encapsulate the moister and about ten years on a roof surface the moister can migrate up though the shingle and cause blisters. Those blisters pop, next rain every blister can hold a drop on water that can migrate back down to the mat and the whole process starts again in mass form. Usually the south/west side of the home is affected first. My recommendation is to use any manufacture you would like, but make sure to they use a fiberglass mat and don’t forget to use a product that is (A/R) algae resistant.
Also a foot note; Color plays one of the most import parts of a composition roofs life expectancy and in my opinion, most manufactures oversell there warranties.
My personal observations in the southern states are that regardless of whether you purchase 20,30,40,50 or LifeTime warranty shingles:
22-27yrs. White
20-24yrs. Tans, Light Tones
18-22yrs. Grays, Gray/Blues, Browns
16-20yrs. Blacks
