My living room and dining room share 1 long, undivided wall (25 feet). The living room (15 feet) is in the front of the house and the dining room (10 feet) is in the back. I want to put up chair rail and wallpaper the bottom half of the dining room walls. My problem is that since the wall is shared by both rooms, I can't just stop the chair rail and wallpaper in the middle of the wall where the living room and dining rooms meet. I need to buy/make some kind of divider that goes 36-38 inches up the wall, just higher than the chair rail height. Has anyone done this? What is this divider called in carpentry terms so I can search the web for a measured drawing or a preassembled piece?

DChambers, Off hand I don't recall what the term is for the partial wall, but building it should be no problem. Simply take some 2x4s to create the skeleton, attach to existing wall stud and floor, cover with drywall, tape and mud joints. For the top take a 1x6 to cap the wall, under the cap take some trim/moulding to create a nice transition from the cap to the drywall, paint the drywall portion, stain the cap and trim. I do recall seeing one of the home improvement shows do a project like what you're wanting, I believe it was "men in toolbelts" (I only "occasionally" watch them), so you might check out their website for additional info.
