Safety and health is a concern to all DIYers. Knowing the proper steps, procedures and/or who to call is paramount to protecting you, your household and the environment, whether you are dealing with asbestos, lead, mold, or treated wood, chemicals, paint removers, acids, caustics, cleaners, pesticides or similar items. Learning about the materials, risks and safe work methods and/or selecting an environmental contractor is key to disposing of and cleaning such materials up legally and economically. In home improvement, knowledge is power, and there is a great deal of fear and misinformation, particularly concerning hazardous materials and substances. This open forum community is intended for discussion of issues regarding hazardous materials, alternative uses, materials removal and disposal, personal protective equipment, managing health risks within and around the home, ladders and scaffolds, power tool safety, fire safety, groundwater, storm, flood and earthquake planning, building and environmental permits, waste and septic discharges, wetland, forest, vegetation management and FEMA. The forum is open, so feel free to discuss issues in the home or workplace. Caution: The posts in this forum’s topics may involve safety and regulatory issues, and are subject to our Terms of Use (including Sections 7 and 13 thereof). All information and advice in this forum is provided for your informational purposes only, and by participating in this forum, you are indicating your agreement to evaluate, and bear all risks associated with the use of any such information or advice, including any reliance on the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of such information and advice. If you ever feel unsafe or unsure, call in a professional. Codes vary from area to area and while proper disposal may call for certain methods in one area they may call for completely different solutions in others. When in doubt, seek a locally licensed professional.
