Safety on Bob Vilas shows and Ryley the carpenter?

11/17/2000 08:10 PM Nailgun

I love Bob Vila's shows but safety does not seem to be a priority.I have been in construction for over ten years and have seen many avoidable accidents including one death. I am now a general contractor and never allow my crew to work without basic safety procedures.A perfect example is this fellow Ryley. He is a perfect example of what not to do. He also seems to be injured quite often. For example he and crew were laying 2x4 sleepers on a concrete floor and he was using a powder activated nail gun. He was not using any safety glasses nor hearing protection. Not only that but his entire hand was covered with a big white bandage, no doubt the result of his non exsistent safety protocol. Many do it your self people rely on Bob Vilas shows for information. It would be nice to see some basic common sense safety being put into use. Any opinions on this matter? Thanks

Safety on Bob Vilas shows and Ryley the carpenter?

There is alot to be said on this subject and I can only offer some personal opinions.I don't think there is anything more important than using personal safety equipment in any profession where hazards are present. Not only is ones health at risk but this is part of the reason our healthcare and insurance costs are so high.I can't speak for anyone in particular however, there are many people who have been in trade work many years without using safety procedures just like many people who don't wear seat belts and have not been in a car accident. You are correct that it sends out the wrong signal to anyone new to the job.If you ever watch Norm Abrams (the "other carpenter")on his show he is careful to point out that you should follow all safety practices etc, etc.I doubt there are many of us who follow every safety practice during the course of the day in all of the many activities we pursue but I agree that if you are teaching/showing a procedure that the safety factors should be included.
