Sharpening a veneer saw ? |

Hey T-Chisel!
I really enjoy the show (specially
Al's participations!! he is great :)).
Now, the question to the masters: how do you sharpen a veneer saw?
It seems that you need to put a bevel
on it but I do not grasp the details.
Could you please enlighten me on that?
Thanks for the tip (and all the other tips!)

Hey Ronaldo...saw your post for a while so I'll through my 2 cents in. If I'm out of bounds Big-T delete me, man.
On the episode that T-Chizz does on the blue steel dovetail sharpening..same approach of looking at the light for reflection, using the triangle file, but you kinda put a bit of pressure angling the file cut towards the handle. Of course I'm assuming its the short approx 3" arced veneer saw, 2 cutting edges and that brown handle.
T-Chisel may have another approach, now I'm curious. |

sorry ...i have been trying to finish the bottom of the bombe......to be honest ..i have never tried to sharpen my veneer saw.....but i think i would do what Neil just said.....i would try to sharpen it so it looks the same as it is.....i know i would try my best and if i mess it up i would reach for my scalpel.and get another saw ....i tried using that saw when i built the sideboard and had a very bad experience with it...i kept tearing the veneer .....i guess i put too much pressure on the saw....i got a great result from cutting with a knife and using a shooting board........sorry ,.not much help this time... |

Hey Neil,
thanks for your reply!
yep, it this saw.
but I was thinking that some kind
of sharpening stone is involved in the
beveling and also on cleaning up
after the filing.
let's wait for the master's approach ;)

T-Chisel beat me to reply
by just 1sec! now that's timing!
and yes, you have to go lightly
with the saw to avoid tearing
the veneer.
well, knives are easier to
sharpen than saws ;)

Veneer Saw sharpening |

Hi Ronaldo:
Glad your post got a push...it's lunch and I see the opportunity to post my full approach. Out of respect for Master-T, I was a bit hesitant. This is how I sharpen my veneer saw blades,..... always new blades.
Just like T-Mac's dovetail saw episode, I clamp up close to the teeth, I don't have a vise like he has, so I quickly cut wood pieces slightly deeper than the depth of the saw you posted and clamp it in my pattern makers vise.
Triangular file, 90 degree to the blade, parallel to the floor, and slightly angled back toward the handle, this will angle the teeth slightly back.
Then I use a file on the backside of the blade and gently get all the teeth to a point. Very light passes.
After that, I run the face over an old oil stone to remove any tiny burrs, site the teeth, make my quality decision and go.
That will work for you Ronaldo.
Hey Master-T.....I was wondering how you were going to clean out in between the fret work....SWEET!!!. I guess that's where that song..the Monster Mash-it...came from. Sorry that was bad, couldn't resist.
Also Tommy.....I see Eli got that project section going....COOL!!!!

Thank you guys for your help!
(Neil, shouldn't we all challenge our masters at one point?? ;)
T-Chisel, it is a pleasure to watch the show, I am always learning something,
and I believe I am not the only one.
(the episode on attaching the legs to a post came really handy as I was building a shaker round stand, my first project by the way; but still a lot to improve in the dovetail cutting :s) |

Hey Ronaldo....
Absolutely we should challenge the Master, but I don't know.....gotta get a little comfortable and show respect in the man's house first, I'm a relative newcomer. :)
BUT.... you, me, Dave (where you been) and Al will challenge T-Mac in the UFC Octagon, anytime anyday!!!!! Big-T can have Eli in is corner, you know those NBSS boy's like to stick together and Chuck can referee.
Leave the Plane iron's and chisels at the door. Who's sell'in tickets???
Dave.....how's the sofa/coffee table cabinet exposed dovetail birds-eye thingy coming???? |
