Slab or full basement

07/11/2007 04:03 PM Starzip

I have been reading pros and cons re building on slab,on slab with radiant heat, crawl space and full basement. All good explanations, but no where can I find a comparison on cost per square foot of each choice. I hope someone out there can give me some answers or tell me where I should be asking the question.
I am in the glorious state of Maine if that makes any difference.
Thanks

Slab or basement

You might go through this site. Note that the "foundation quality" relates to whether it is a slab, crawspace or basement.

http://www.building-cost.net/

But it is going to be fairly crude in price for those options.

In your area you will need 4-6 ft depth for footings and in general that means that slabs aren't that practical.

But there are other options such as using a SHALLOW FROST PROOF FOUNDATION SYSTEMS. That allows you do a slab with only 18" footers and using insulation under the ground to keep it from freezing.

Also there is a good chance that rock or water table levels will affect your choice.

At this point you might want to start talking to a builder that does design-build.
