It's normal to have the sofa facing the rooms focal point, if that's the view then face the windows, or is it a room you watch TV and gather at night? or curl up with a good book next to the fireplace?
The trick is to pick one focus and arrange the furniture around that . . . if it's just a place to sit and talk make it comfortable to that, putting the sofa and chairs close together.
Moving furniture is free, so try a bunch of options before settling on one.
