I have a 1940's house with a 1970's kitchen. Should I remove the soffit in the kitchen to make way for 42" cabinets, or should I leave the soffit intact and install 30" cabinets instead? (The kitchen is only 12' x 12'.)

Before committing open up the sofits and see what is in them.

Not unusal to find pipes or ducts.
