My husband and I are in the process of building a new home and would like to add a fireplace insert. We are wondering if anyone has any idea how to do your own decorative stonework around the fireplace facing (and perhaps including the mantel). We are thinking of using cultured stone to do this (lighter and less expensive than the real stuff) but how would we attatch it to the facing? Or if any of you have any suggestions, it would be much appreciated.

DBarac: The manufacturer of the cultured stone product usually suggests a method of installation. I've seen systems that use a wire mesh that is first attached to the surfaces that the cultured stone is to be applied to. Mortar is then spread onto and through the mesh and the stones applied to the wet mortar. Later, using a grout bag, (similar to a cake decorating bag) mortar is applied between the stones and excess is carefully scraped off.

Just check from the supplier of your materials if there are suggested installation procedures to follow...Chances are they may even have a small class you can attend for free.

Thanks so much for your input. I went to the manufacturer's website and was actually able to download a PDF file with detailed installation instructions (http:www/culturedstone.com). It told me all i needed to know. Now the only problem is to decided between cultured stone and real stone for the surrond (thin stone if using real). Depends how real the cultured stone looks I guess. Any idea of the benefits of real vs. cultured - anyone? The size is for the surround of a small gas fireplace (maybe 5'x5' maximum area). What do you think?
