The finish guru's

I have a question for you guys. I did my step stool with 2 coats of Boiled linseed oil. I want to put shellac over that so it will have a hard finish on the stool. My question is do I have to wipe the stool down first before I spray the shellac? It seems as if it has a waxy finish to it now. I was thinking to take Denatured alcohol and just wipe it off then spray it. Would that be fine and work?

My experiance with wiping straight BLO is that the wood will extrude some of the oil for a week or two after aplication, and you will have to wipe off the excess during that time. Then you need to let the oil set for another week or so before sealing it. The oil will never dry, you just need it to equalize with the wood so that it will allow your finish to stick. So after about a month just apply the shellac as you normally would.

But if your in a hurry and want to do it right away it's shellac so if there are problems after a week or two it's easy to fix.

Thanks for the reply.
Well yesterday I looked at it and it seems as from friday it had really dried up. So I wiped it with denatured alcohol and sprayed it. So far no problems. I have 4 coats on it now and it has some serious depth to it.
