Thermister and venting

It might occur from a lint (or fabric softener sheet residue) on the *thermistor* but not elsewhere in the dryer.

** The error is sporadic and I'm curious if I should try to replace the thermistor **

Those thermistors can act 'flaky' when they're failing even testing inconstantly. Many technicians will just replace them and do further checking if that didn't solve the problem.

** Whether paying for the lint cleaning makes sense is another issue... **

Having the dryer cleaned (or more importantly the venting *all the way from the dryer to the outdoors* - see the following link) should be done several times a year as preventative maintenance and a safety precaution but it is unlikely to be the cause of your present condition IMO.
