I am about to tile an outdoor balcony (exposed to rain with slope for water runoff). The balcony has a room under it so it has to be absolutely waterproof. I am going to use 3/4inch underlayment, 1/2 backerboard with outdoor thinset adhesive. I was wondering what should I coat the backerboard with to make the surface extra waterproof. Do people embed membranes in the mortar the way it is done on showers? Do you waterproof underneath the backerboard?
