I need to move a (small) 8 ft. red maple tree to a new location in yard. What is best way to do that without damaging young tree? Do I do it now (fall) or in the spring? It still has some leaves left on it.

Ka Girl Replant your maple tree in the fall,but do not do any fertilizing at this time.Dig as big a root ball as you can move easily,put in a good sized hole then backfill the hole.Next you want to water till the soil is saturated. Thisgets rid of any air around the roots. Next thing you must do and a lot of people do not do is prune the top of the tree back several inches. This is to compensate for the roots you lost when you dug the tree . If you fertilize at this time or fail to prune back the top of the tree chances are you will lose the tree.
