Urine stain damage on Parquet floors

01/24/2006 05:02 PM popeck

My husband and I just bought our first home, and we've found a few unwelcome surprises.

The downstairs has parquet wood flooring. The dining room was covered by an area rug that the seller kindly left. We decided to remove the rug, and discovered that dog urine (reason for removing rug) had soaked through the rug, and into the wood, turning it black in several places. Large places.

No warping. Just black spots.

Can I refinish this? We are going to refinish the hardwood upstairs anyway, so is this as 'simple' as just using the drum sander in both rooms that day? Or is there another process? I can't replace them, not right now - financially. And they're original to the house. I'd like to keep as much original wood as possible.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm sure I will have many, many more questions :-)

Thanks, Pamela
