I am remodeling my kitchen and want to install a vented hood. I will have a cabinet above it but no soffitt between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling.

Can I run the vent into the wall and up through the topplate on the wall studs then continue up to the roof or outside soffitt vent?

Can the venting be single layer vent or does it need some type of double walled thickness? Any certain size, I wouldn't want to restrict airflow.
