Vertical rough cedar siding construction

03/31/2000 10:40 AM mecum

I am building a detached garage and want to match the exterior of my residence. It has vertical 1 x 12, rough side out, red cedar siding with 1 x 2 cedar striping covering the gaps. The garage interior is finished on the residence, so I cannot see how they accomplished nailing the siding to 16" O.C. framing. What is the best practice? T & G playwood exterior over the framing? Horizontal 1 x 6 nailing strips? Weather temps are from -20 F to 100 F.

Hi mecum, instead of doing individual planks why not use panels where the individual planks are already assembled this way it's quicker assembly and you can nail directly into the studs. Here's a link to one company Cedar Vally. Hope this helps!
