Want to build poker table

05/26/1999 03:56 PM

I want to build an oak poker table. Thinking of plywood underneath, 6" wide oak boards for the pocket areas. A Circle of thin plywood with felt covering in the middle.
Any tips?
What tool to cut out the 1" deep, concave coin pockets ? (the beercan holes will just go straight thru so i can use a hole saw) thx

Use a router to make the coin slots. Also a little tip for making the corner mitre cuts is a formula "Angle = (360/Points)/2", that is to say if your table is to be hexagon (six sided) in shape then the mitre cuts would be 30 degrees (30 = (360/6)/2). Good luck, and pop a beer for me!

Thanks! after trying several bits, found a
catalog with a 1 1/4" core box bit to fit
my 1/4 router.
I'm making it 8 sided so i figure miter cuts will be 45deg, right? And straight on the other end.

A 45 then a straight (non-mitred) board should work, however if you want a smooth professional looking connection between the two wood pieces mitre them both at 22.5 degrees so that each piece of wood will have the same appearance. It's all a matter of taste so 45 or 22.5 it's up to you and your poker buddies. Good luck!
