Washing Machine tub not spinning or draining

01/26/2002 04:15 PM jcpress

My in-laws gave me their old G.E. washing machine. It worked when they moved and we put it into storage for about 6 months. We then loaded it onto a moving truck and drove it about 200 miles to our new home. When I hooked it up, it filled with water fine, but the tub would not rotate during the wash cycle, nor would it go into a spin cycle or empty out the tub (we had to siphon the water out, and there's still some left inside). It's a better machine than the one the previous owners left for us, so I'd like to fix it if it's not too expensive, or even fix it myself. I opened up the back of the machine and can't see any loose wires or belts or anything. Anyone have an idea what might be wrong? Is it something I can repair myself(I'm relatively handy)? Or, if I need an expert repairman, how much would such a repair cost?

Thanks,
Joel

Dear Joel,
You might not be able to see, but, if the machine will not spin, is the motor running? If it is your belt is either off or broken. If the motor does not run, there may be a loose connection at the electrical controls. Do yourself a favor and call a repairman for an estimate. Most will do this free and if you decide to repair, the cost depending upon the problem can run anywhere from 50 to 150 dollars.
