What size trowel do you recommend for 4in and 8in wall tiles, and 12, 16, and 18 in floor tiles? I also read some prefer to butter the back of each individual tile instead of applying the thinset to the floor first and then laying the tile. Any recommendations?
Thanks |

I believe your bag of thinset should have the specs for that. Mine said 1/8 for the 12 inch tiles I installed. Hardibacker suggested 1/8 under the backerboard (I used 1/16).
I think it may faster to put the morter on the floor instead of buttering. I believe it is less tiring also, but that may just be personal preference. Of all at the tile I have removed from my walls, it looks like they used 1/16 or smaller. My guess is that you should read your bag.
